BREAKING: FG Steps In As PENGASSAN–Dangote Rift Takes Dramatic Turn
The Federal Government has waded into the heated dispute between the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and the Dangote Group, leading to a dramatic breakthrough after hours of intense negotiations in Abuja.
In a statement issued early Wednesday by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Mohammed Maigari Dingyadi, the government confirmed that both parties have reached a truce to end the crippling nationwide strike and resolve the controversy surrounding the mass disengagement of workers.
According to the communiqué:
Union Rights Affirmed: The Minister reaffirmed that the right of workers to unionise is guaranteed by Nigerian law and must be respected.
Redeployment of Workers: The Dangote Group agreed to redeploy the over 800 workers who were disengaged, placing them in other companies within the conglomerate without loss of pay.
No Victimisation: Both parties pledged that no staff would be penalised for their role in the dispute.
Strike Suspension: PENGASSAN agreed to begin the process of calling off its nationwide strike in good faith.
The high-stakes meeting had in attendance top government officials, including the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun; Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu; Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Barr. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha; Director-General of the DSS, Adeola Ajayi; and Director-General of the NIA, Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed.
With this development, industrial peace appears to be returning to the nation’s oil and gas sector, though observers say the coming days will reveal how smoothly the resolutions are implemented.
