EU and ADC Demand Electoral Reforms for Credible 2027 Nigerian Elections
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU-EOM) have called for urgent electoral reforms to address irregularities in Nigeria’s 2023 general elections and ensure free, fair, and credible polls in 2027. During a meeting in Abuja, led by ADC National Chairman Senator David Mark and EU-EOM Chief of Mission Barry Andrews, both parties criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for failing to deliver on real-time result transmission via the IReV portal and declared results that did not reflect votes cast.
The ADC also faulted the judiciary for undermining the electorate’s mandate by resolving disputes through court rulings rather than democratic processes. To strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system, the ADC proposed that the appointment of INEC’s Chairman and National Commissioners should involve political parties with at least five National Assembly members, rather than being solely the President’s prerogative. The party emphasized that electoral disputes should be resolved through fresh elections to uphold the people’s right to choose their leaders.
The EU delegation, including experts like Gautier Mignot and Ralph-Michael Peters, aimed to identify flaws and propose corrective measures, reinforcing the need for reforms to restore public trust in Nigeria’s democratic process ahead of 2027.
