FG Orders Strict Enforcement of ‘No Work, No Pay’ Policy as ASUU Begins Nationwide Strike

The Tinubu-led Federal Government has directed vice-chancellors of all federal universities to immediately enforce the “No Work, No Pay” policy against members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) who have embarked on a nationwide strike beginning today, Monday, October 14, 2025.
The directive was contained in a circular dated October 13, 2025, signed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, and obtained by Lagos Reporters.
According to the circular, the Ministry of Education expressed deep concern over ASUU’s decision to resume industrial action despite ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to address their grievances. The government warned that it would no longer tolerate breaches of labour laws or disruptions to the academic calendar.
“In line with the provisions of the Labour Laws of the Federation, the Federal Government reiterates its position on the enforcement of the ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy in respect of any employee who fails to discharge his or her official duties during the period of strike action,” the circular stated.
The directive, which was copied to the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Permanent Secretary of Education, Pro-Chancellors of all federal universities, Director-General of the Budget Office, Accountant-General of the Federation, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), also ordered all vice-chancellors to conduct an immediate roll call and physical headcount of academic staff to ensure compliance.
ASUU announced the commencement of its nationwide strike earlier today, citing the government’s alleged failure to implement previous agreements and improve funding for public universities.
The union’s action has once again disrupted academic activities across federal universities, leaving students uncertain about when classes will resume.
Meanwhile, education stakeholders have urged both parties to return to the negotiation table to prevent another prolonged shutdown of the university system.
