KOGI BOAT MISHAP: OVER 10 DEAD, 24 RESCUED, 42 MISSING - NEMA
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed over 10 fatalities, 24 people rescued, and 42 still missing following a boat mishap in Kogi State.
In a Thursday update, NEMA said search and rescue operations are ongoing. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening when a boat carrying about 80 passengers capsized on the River Niger. The vessel had departed Onugwa community in Ibaji LGA and was heading to Olushi village before it sank. NEMA described the incident as a tragedy that claimed several lives and left dozens missing.
NEMA’s Director General, Zubaida Umar, activated the agency’s Abuja Operations Office to bolster the response. Search teams have recovered 14 bodies so far, while efforts to locate the missing continue. Community divers are working alongside official responders, including NEMA, KOSEMA, NIWA, the Red Cross, Civil Defence, and the Fire Service. The agency said it will provide periodic updates as more information becomes available.
The Head of the Abuja Operations Office, Zakari Abubakar, also visited the traditional ruler of Onugwa to offer condolences.
Separately, the Kogi State Government reported on Wednesday that at least 26 passengers had died. Information Commissioner Kingsley Fanwo called the accident “a heartbreaking loss” and conveyed Governor Usman Ododo’s condolences. The governor directed state agencies to support victims’ families and strengthen safety on the waterways.
Both NEMA and the state government urged riverine communities to strictly comply with safety measures, avoid overloading boats, and ensure all passengers wear life jackets.
