FG BANS SALE OF ALCOHOL IN SACHETS, SMALL BOTTLES
The Federal Government has officially banned the production, sale, and distribution of alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and bottles smaller than 200 milliliters.
The ban, which takes effect on January 1, 2026, aims to curb alcohol abuse and safeguard public health, according to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
Announcing the decision in Abuja, NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, said the government has approved the recruitment of 1,000 new staff to strengthen the agency’s enforcement and regulatory capacity.
She explained that the measure followed a Senate resolution and a directive from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, stressing that it was primarily intended to protect minors and young adults from easy access to alcohol.
Adeyeye clarified that the ban applies only to spirit drinks packaged in sachets and containers smaller than 200ml, not all alcoholic beverages.
NAFDAC had earlier reached an agreement with beverage industry stakeholders to phase out such packaging by January 2024, but extended the deadline to December 2025 to allow producers to adjust.
She noted that the enforcement aligns with Nigeria’s commitment to the World Health Organisation’s strategy to reduce harmful alcohol consumption.
The NAFDAC boss urged manufacturers, distributors, and retailers to comply before the deadline, warning that no further extensions will be granted.
She added that the agency will collaborate with the Ministry of Health, Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), and the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to launch a nationwide sensitisation campaign on the dangers of alcohol misuse.
