NATIONWIDE SHUTDOWN LOOMS AS ELECTRICITY WORKERS PROTEST ALLEGED BRUTALITY

The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has threatened a nationwide shutdown following an alleged brutal assault on staff of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

In a statement signed by its Acting General Secretary, Dominic Igwebike, the union said the action became necessary after workers on duty at the Egbu 132/33kV Transmission Substation in Imo State were allegedly beaten, held at gunpoint, and abducted by armed police officers reportedly acting on orders from the state government.

The officers were said to have forcefully entered the substation’s control rooms, vandalised equipment, and disrupted operations. Workers were allegedly assaulted, held hostage, and whisked away to an undisclosed location.

NUEE revealed that it has already instructed its members to halt power supply operations in Imo State until further notice. It further warned that it would withdraw services nationwide unless urgent steps are taken to protect electricity workers across the country.

“The union expresses deep shock and outrage over the level of gangsterism and unprofessional conduct displayed by police officers acting on behalf of the Imo State government,” the statement said.

According to the union, the officers invaded the Egbu substation in an attempt to enforce an illegal outage, disconnecting power at gunpoint and compelling operators to open breakers under duress. Staff were allegedly beaten and assaulted, while personal belongings including phones, laptops, and vehicles were destroyed. CCTV cameras were also vandalised.

NUEE condemned the “brutal and barbaric” attack and demanded the immediate release of the abducted workers. It also called for a formal commitment from TCN management, the Federal Ministry of Power, and the Inspector General of Police to guarantee the safety of electricity personnel and prevent similar incidents.

The union further demanded full replacement of damaged property and medical care for all affected staff.

It directed members to stay away from work until their safety is assured, warning that failure to address the issues promptly would leave the union with no choice but to enforce a nationwide shutdown.
