Asia Flood Death Toll Surpasses 1,000 as Military Rushes Aid to Stranded Survivors
The combined death toll from devastating floods and landslides across Asia has exceeded 1,000, with Indonesia and Sri Lanka bearing the brunt of the disaster as military forces were deployed Monday to deliver aid to thousands of isolated survivors.
Separate weather systems unleashed prolonged torrential rain last week across Sri Lanka’s entire island nation, large swathes of Indonesia’s Sumatra island, southern Thailand, and northern Malaysia. While the region is in its annual monsoon season, experts say climate change is intensifying rainfall and supercharging storms, leading to more extreme events.
Residents in the hardest-hit areas were seen clinging to rooftops awaiting rescue by boat or helicopter, with entire villages cut off from roads and basic supplies.
In Indonesia, where at least 502 people have died and more than 500 remain missing, President Prabowo Subianto visited North Sumatra on Monday and declared that “the worst has passed, hopefully.”
