APC National Chairman Declares Fubara Party Leader in Rivers Amid Crisis With Nyesom Wike
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, has declared Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, as the political leader of the party in the state amid an ongoing political crisis with his estranged godfather and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Yilwatda’s declaration comes at a time of renewed hostilities between Governor Fubara and Wike over the control of political leadership and party structures in Rivers State, following the governor’s recent defection to the APC.
After joining the ruling party, Fubara had proclaimed himself the “001” of the APC in Rivers State — a claim that was immediately dismissed by Wike, who insisted that he still controls the dominant political structure in the state. Wike further argued that both the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had aligned politically to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
Reacting to the controversy during an interview on Channels Television’s Hard Copy, the APC National Chairman clarified the party’s official stance on the leadership tussle.
“Governor Fubara is the leader of the APC in Rivers State, but he would need to coordinate with every other person in the state,” Yilwatda said.
The APC chairman stressed that his personal support would strictly follow the outcome of the party’s primary election process.
“I don’t choose who to support in the state’s primary election. If Fubara emerges as the APC candidate, I’ll support him,” he stated. “If he loses the primary, I’ll sympathise with him and go with the person who wins the primary election.”
The development is widely viewed as a significant boost for Governor Fubara amid the deepening rift with his former political ally, as Rivers State continues to experience intense political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
