2027 Polls: Atiku Raises Ramadan Concern, Demands Timetable Review
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for setting February 20, 2027, as the date for Nigeria’s next general elections, calling it insensitive and poorly considered.
The proposed election date falls within the Ramadan period, which is expected to run from February 7 to March 8, 2027.
Atiku, in a statement shared on his account, argued that holding elections during Ramadan could reduce voter turnout and compromise inclusivity in the electoral process.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain said scheduling such a key national exercise in the middle of a major religious observance shows a lack of understanding of Nigeria’s socio-religious dynamics.
He wrote, “INEC must urgently reconsider the February 20, 2027 date for the general elections. This date falls within Ramadan, a sacred season of fasting, reflection, and spiritual devotion for millions of Nigerian Muslims.
“Elections are not mere formalities—they require active participation, stamina, and focus. Holding them during a major religious observance demonstrates poor judgment and a troubling lack of sensitivity to our nation’s socio-religious realities.
“In a diverse country like Nigeria, inclusive planning is essential. Even choosing an acceptable election date is a matter of competence, foresight, and respect for citizens.
“If INEC cannot manage something as basic as scheduling, Nigerians have every right to question its ability to deliver free, fair, and credible elections in 2027.”
