NIGERIA EVACUATES 1,230 CITIZENS FROM NIGER AMID SECURITY CONCERNS

The Federal Government has evacuated 1,230 Nigerians stranded in the Republic of Niger due to ongoing political instability, reaffirming its commitment to citizens’ safety abroad.

According to a statement by Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, the evacuation was conducted in two phases, with 708 returnees arriving on March 23, 2026, and 522 others on March 29, 2026. The operation was carried out in collaboration with key partners, including the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Upon arrival in Kano, the evacuees were received by multiple agencies, profiled, and provided temporary shelter, food, and medical care before being reunited with their families.

The government described the exercise as part of its broader responsibility to protect Nigerians globally and commended both the Republic of Niger and international partners, including the International Committee of the Red Cross, for their support.
It also urged Nigerians abroad to obey local laws and stay connected with Nigerian diplomatic missions for assistance when needed.
