EXPLAINER: What the Constitution Says About FCT Under Proposed State Police Bill Will Surprise You
Fresh clarification has emerged on the proposed State Police Bill, with constitutional provisions indicating that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will not operate a separate state police structure.

Under Section 299 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), the provisions of the Constitution apply to the FCT "as if it were one of the States of the Federation," but the territory remains under the direct administration of the Federal Government through the President and the Minister of the FCT. Consequently, the FCT falls under the jurisdiction of the Nigeria Police Force (Federal Police) rather than a state-controlled police service.
The clarification further states that, if the State Police Bill is eventually signed into law, the Minister of the FCT will only have the authority to provide logistical support for policing and security operations within the territory, not to establish or control a separate FCT police force.
