JUST IN: FG Extends NYSC Orientation Camp to Six Weeks, Replaces Military Leadership, Scraps Drills and Passing-Out Parade

The Federal Government has approved sweeping reforms to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), introducing major structural and operational changes aimed at repositioning the scheme for greater relevance in national development.

A key highlight of the reforms is the extension of the NYSC orientation camp programme from three weeks to six weeks. The additional period is expected to provide corps members with more intensive skills acquisition, entrepreneurship training, and workforce preparedness.

As part of the overhaul, military leadership of the scheme will be replaced with a civilian administrative structure. The government also approved the scrapping of military drills and parade activities during the orientation camp, marking a significant shift from the programme's long-standing paramilitary tradition.

In another major change, the traditional Passing-Out Parade (POP) at the completion of the one-year national service will be replaced with a graduation ceremony, reflecting the government's new direction for the scheme.

The reforms also include the introduction of a redesigned NYSC uniform intended to project professionalism and give the scheme a renewed identity.

According to the Federal Government, the comprehensive reforms are designed to transform the NYSC into a more skills-driven, innovation-focused programme that aligns with Nigeria's economic priorities and youth development objectives.
