SENATE EXPANDS SAFE SCHOOLS PROBE, EXTENDS PANEL’S TENURE

The Senate has extended by three weeks the tenure of its ad hoc committee investigating the Safe Schools Initiative and expanded its mandate to include the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, and the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA).

Chairman of the committee, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, said the expanded probe would enable a comprehensive investigation into the funding, implementation and accountability of education and social intervention programmes linked to students' safety and welfare.

The Senate approved the request through a voice vote, giving the committee an additional three weeks to conclude its investigation and submit its report.
