Falconets Beat England 3-0, Book Place In U-20 World Cup Quarter-Finals

Nigeria’s Falconets have reached the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after a convincing 3-0 win over England on Thursday in Poland.

Tosin Rafiu opened the scoring after just eight minutes, producing a brilliant individual effort to beat the England defence before firing past goalkeeper Katie Cox.

England pushed for an equaliser and were awarded a penalty, but Nigeria goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma became the hero, saving Rachel Maltby’s spot-kick and keeping the Falconets ahead.

Nigeria returned from the break strongly, with Janet Akekoromowei doubling the lead just two minutes into the second half with a well-taken left-footed volley.

Mercy Mamudu then sealed the victory in the 73rd minute as Nigeria completed a 3-0 win and booked their place in the last eight.

The victory comes after a difficult start to the tournament. The Falconets lost 2-0 to Spain and drew 0-0 with China before responding with a massive 10-1 win over New Caledonia to qualify from Group F.

Nigeria, who have finished as runners-up twice at the U-20 Women’s World Cup, will face the winner of the Poland vs Colombia Round of 16 match in Lodz on Sunday for a place in the semi-finals.
