Public Workers Set to Strike Over Rising Hardship

Public service workers across Nigeria have announced a three-day warning strike from October 2 to 4, 2026, to protest the harsh economic conditions and push for better welfare. The strike starts at midnight on Friday and ends on Sunday. The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council told its national and state leaders to mobilise workers immediately. The order came in a circular dated October 1, 2026, signed by the council's National Secretary, Olowoyo Gbenga. The council said it acted because the Federal Government allegedly ignored demands sent to President Bola Tinubu in a letter dated September 21. It called on workers in federal, state and local government offices to join, saying workers and their families are carrying the heaviest burden of the crisis. It described the hardship as unbearable and frustrating. The Governor of Ekiti State, Biodun Oyebanji, through the State’s Executive Council, has adopted a harmonised retirement age of sixty-five (65) years and a maximum of forty (40) years of pensionable service, for teachers in the public service of Ekiti State. The statement was contained in a statement signed and made available to journalists by the State’s Commissioner for Information, Taiwo Olatunbosun. During the meeting, the SEC approved the domestication of the Teachers’ Harmonised Retirement Age Act 2022 to address workforce needs in the state’s school system and retain experienced educators to improve learning outcomes. Sugary drinks increase risk of heart disease in children —Expert

A Gombe-based cardiologist, Dr Abubakar Sani, says excessive consumption of sugary drinks increases risk of cardiovascular diseases in children. He said excessive consumption of Sugar-Sweetened Beverages (SSBs) might predispose children to the risk of heart disease, hypertension and type 2 diabetes. Sani, a consultant cardiologist, Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday. He cautioned against excessive consumption of sugary drinks, in view of the prevalence of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) linked to consuming such drinks. Sani said more attention needs to be drawn towards the health impact of such drinks on the heart health of children.
