Public Workers Set to Strike Over Rising Hardship
Public service workers across Nigeria have announced a three-day warning strike from October 2 to 4, 2026, to protest the harsh economic conditions and push for better welfare.
The strike starts at midnight on Friday and ends on Sunday.
The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council told its national and state leaders to mobilise workers immediately.
The order came in a circular dated October 1, 2026, signed by the council's National Secretary, Olowoyo Gbenga.
The council said it acted because the Federal Government allegedly ignored demands sent to President Bola Tinubu in a letter dated September 21.
It called on workers in federal, state and local government offices to join, saying workers and their families are carrying the heaviest burden of the crisis.
It described the hardship as unbearable and frustrating.
Its demands include cutting petrol price to ₦500 per litre, an immediate wage award for workers and a tripartite committee to negotiate a new national minimum wage before 2027.
The council urged members to spread the word and said it is confident of victory.
