EFCC Not Ready 5 Months After Saying Tompolo ‘Has Questions to Answer’

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is under public scrutiny for its failure to prosecute Government Ekpumupolo, a former militant leader also known as Tompolo.
Tompolo became a person of interest to the anti-graft agency when videos of his birthday celebration began to circulate.

In the videos, Tompolo can be seen throwing naira notes in the air and stepping on them.
On May 12, the EFCC made an X post saying Tompolo “will have questions to answer” following the incident.

This post read, “Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer.”

Thirteen days after this post, Awe Olukoyede, the EFCC chairman, said during an interview that the agency would subject the video to forensic analysis, as it may have been doctored.

“We have invited Tompolo. The whole of Nigeria knows that, and we have said that nobody is above the law,” Olukoyede said.

“Nobody should go and question Tompolo over the allegation. It is just an allegation. They are mere allegations for now. When he comes, we will look at it. We have subjected the video to forensic analysis.

“We have to do that because, these days too, people can impose… We have subjected it and invited him. And it is not until we conclude the case that we can say whether Tompolo is guilty or not. We must give every Nigerian a fair hearing and the benefit of the doubt.”

The EFCC has been relying on Section 21 ) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act to prosecute Nigerians who spray the naira, but Nigerians have described it as a selective witchhunt after Raheem Okoya, the son of a billionaire businessman, and Tompolo did not get charged for their infractions.

Section 21 of the CBN Act states, “It is against the law to spray the Naira banknotes at occasions. It is against the law to dance/stamp on the Naira banknotes.”

Since Sunday, Nigerians have been calling for the EFCC to pick up from where it left off on Tompolo.

On Monday, FIJ called Dele Oyewale, the agency’s spokesman, but he asked that a text message be sent to him instead.

FIJ sent a text message on Monday morning, but he had yet to respond at press time.
