Why Jonathan Barred From 2027 Presidential Race – Appeal Court Ex-President Salami Explains
Former President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Salami, has given reasons why former President Goodluck Jonathan will not be eligible to seek the nation’s top job in 2027.
Salami stated that the constitution prevents Jonathan from returning to the presidency.
He argued that Jonathan has already spent the maximum period allowed for any individual in that office, noting that the law forbids anyone from holding power for more than eight years.
In a written opinion, Salami pointed out that Jonathan first finished the tenure of the late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, then went on to win a full term of his own. According to him, this makes any new attempt contrary to constitutional provisions.
He maintained that even if Jonathan joins the race and emerges victorious, the result would not survive a legal challenge.
Salami said: “It is painstakingly and dispassionately demonstrated abundantly to all and sundry that ambition of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to contest for the office of the president for the second term in the 2027 general election is effectively and undoubtedly shot down…”
