INEC Disowns Circulating 2027 Election Timetable, Cautions Nigerians on Fake News
The Independent National Electoral Commission has cautioned Nigerians to disregard a purported timetable for the 2027 General Elections currently circulating online.
This was as it described the document as fake and misleading.
In a statement issued on Tuesday through its official communication channels, the Commission made it clear that it has not released any timetable or schedule of activities for the 2027 polls.
INEC stressed that the information in circulation is “not authentic and should be disregarded in its entirety,” noting that no official dates have been fixed for the election, party primaries, or campaign periods.
“Any document or report claiming otherwise is fabricated. The details contained in the false article, including specific election dates, campaign timelines, and party primary windows, are entirely speculative and without any official basis. They do not represent the plans or position of INEC,” the statement said.
The electoral body urged Nigerians, political parties, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders to rely solely on verified INEC platforms for credible information.
These include the Commission’s official website, its verified social media handles on X, Facebook, and Instagram, as well as formal press statements.
“The general public is strongly advised to ignore this misleading report. INEC will make official announcements regarding the 2027 General Elections through the proper channels at the appropriate time,” the Commission emphasised.
INEC recalled that it had issued a similar clarification on January 3, when it debunked earlier claims suggesting that preparations and timelines for the 2027 elections had already been released.
Further reacting, the Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, Adedayo Oketola, described the circulating report as false and misleading, adding that the Commission operates strictly within the provisions of the law.
He cited Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which mandates INEC to publish a notice of election not later than 360 days before the date fixed for a general election, noting that the legal threshold for such an announcement has not yet been reached.
Meanwhile, the Commission has commenced the distribution of Permanent Voter Cards ahead of the February 21 Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory.
INEC said eligible voters are expected to collect their PVCs at their respective registration areas or wards from January 22 to January 26, between 9 am and 3 pm daily.
Voters who are unable to collect their cards within the specified period will have another opportunity to do so at INEC Area Council offices across the FCT.
