State Government Suspends School Activities Indefinitely Over Diphtheria Outbreak
The Plateau State Government has ordered the temporary closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state as a precautionary measure against the spread of suspected diphtheria cases. The directive took effect on Monday, September 7, 2026, and will remain in force until further notice.

The government said the decision followed reports of suspected diphtheria cases in Jos North, Wase, Jos South and Bassa Local Government Areas. Schools that had already resumed academic activities were also directed to shut down.

The directive, issued under the administration of Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, is aimed at protecting pupils, students, teachers and other school personnel while health authorities intensify efforts to contain the suspected outbreak.

School proprietors, administrators, teachers, parents and guardians have been urged to comply with the directive and ensure that pupils and students remain at home throughout the period. The government said further information on the resumption of academic activities would be communicated to the public in due course.

According to reports, Plateau has recorded 143 suspected diphtheria cases and 23 deaths, underscoring the seriousness of the health concern.
