Atiku Has Right To Criticise President, But Repeatedly Calling Him “Bola” Was Disrespectful - Osuntokun

According to a report by VANGUARD on Thursday October 1, 2026, Akin Osuntokun, former spokesman and Director-General of Peter Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign, has faulted former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for repeatedly referring to President Bola Tinubu simply as “Bola” in his October 1 Independence Day address.

In a statement on Thursday, October 1, Osuntokun said Atiku was free to criticise Tinubu and his administration, but described the repeated use of the President’s first name as disrespectful to the office he occupies.

Osuntokun said his long-standing relationship with Atiku had made him reluctant to criticise him strongly since the end of the Olusegun Obasanjo administration in 2007.

He added that Tinubu is the elected President of Nigeria and should be accorded the privileges of the office until he is removed through constitutional or democratic means.

Osuntokun further said those who believe Tinubu should no longer remain in office have legitimate options, including impeachment or defeating him at the ballot box.
