FG Withdraws Charges Against Alleged Fake Agency DG

The Federal Government has withdrawn the eight-count forgery charge filed against Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi, the self-styled Director-General of the alleged non-existent Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council.

The charge was withdrawn on Monday before Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja, and the court accordingly struck it out.

The Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, told the court that the Attorney-General of the Federation reviewed the case file and found some loopholes that informed the decision to withdraw the charge. He said the documents Adeyemi was alleged to have forged could be prosecuted at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory rather than the Federal High Court.

The prosecution counsel said a fresh charge had been filed at the FCT High Court and that Adeyemi would be arraigned afresh without delay. Adeyemi's counsel, Ibrahim Angulu, also a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, did not oppose the withdrawal.

Adeyemi has been in detention since July 14 when he was arrested on the strength of a bench warrant. He was arraigned on charges relating to forgery, fraud and impersonation, pleaded not guilty, and was ordered to be remanded at Kuje Prison. His bail application hearing was halted by the withdrawal of the charge.

Those earlier billed to testify in the matter included the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, and civil servants from the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.
